Ritisha Saxena- Diversity- Week 11

The value diversity brings us has never been clearer in today’s world. From workplaces to schools to communities to global networks, diversity is a powerful tool that strengthens us, by fostering new perspectives, creative development and a deeper understanding of one another.

Diversity can be defined as the differences in culture, race, religion, abilities and perspective. By recognizing and encouraging these different perspectives we support creativity, and the differences that all make us our own person. And these differences are something that should be embraced and used to our collective advantage.

One of the biggest things diversity brings to us is the drive of innovation and creativity. People from different backgrounds collaborate and they bring together a different variety of ideas and perspectives. This diversity helps create creative problem solving which leads to new solutions and groundbreaking ideas. Think of the numerous innovations in technology, medicine, and art that have developed over past years, diversity has played an important role in the majority of them.

Diversity also helps create understanding and empathy. As we are able to see different perspectives, we sometimes step outside of our comfort zones and engage with people who's experiences are different from our own. This helps us realize that there are different approaches to situations!

Overall, without diversity we would not be able to share experiences which would result in us forgetting about the beauty in our differences. Diversity creates unity. As we embrace diversity, we come together to build a stronger, innovative, and united society.

  1. Hi Ritisha! I completely agree with you on how diversity is important especially when it comes to learning empathy. I think empathy is such a crucial social skill. Having empathy can help everyone to better understand each other and foster a more positive community atmosphere, which in return encourages people to share their experiences and create diversity. I think to some degree diversity also encourages people to have empathy, through having a diverse community that encourages different perspectives we have better understanding of different lives which helps people to be able to empathize with others.

  2. Hi Ritisha! I believe that since there are so many layers and variations of societal groups, that diversity should exist almost everywhere. We all have different life experiences, and being able to learn from someone who grew up in a completely different environment or lifestyle can create a lot of empathy and tolerance. I think it’s quite sad to see diversity, equity, and inclusion—all objectively good things—be twisted into something as evil as it is perceived in current times.

There’s a lot of diversity within social groups as well; for example, India has multiple cultures, ethnicities, religions, and languages packed all in one country. Given its geological state as a subcontinent, this is no surprise—America is also home to many cultures. America is often perceived as a cultural melting pot that encompasses people from all different races, cultures, abilities, and forms of self-expression, which is why seeing the new shift in attitude of being intolerant against diversity is so disappointing. America doesn’t have an official religion, and its history is extremely diverse. I believe that America’s diversity is what makes it so unique.
