Yumi Liu - Week 13: History is Written by the Victors

“History is written by the victors.” - Winston Churchill

Ever since President Trump’s second presidential administration, there have been many new policies and changes to old ones.

Along with that, I have seen many articles expressing distress for the importance of certain policies to encourage people to understand and be against the changes. President Trump has publicly claimed that he will stop funding the Department of Education as it supports “diversity, equity and inclusion in educational practices.” Notably, President Trump has "clos[ed] key Department of Education offices and firing half of its workforce" which results in putting "millions of students' education and civil rights at risk."

There are multiple reasons why many experts are concerned about the changes to education in America.

  • The disassembly of the Department of Education makes the opportunity for equal access to education at risk.
  • Schools help remove racial and economic disparity in education, however, the defunding of the education department will make it difficult.
  • Schools will also have a harder time helping low income students and communities, as well as other federal agencies student loan programs.

There is so much more on how President Trump’s actions will affect us and most importantly disproportionately harm students of color, as it will increase racial inequities in education.

While the phrase “history is written by the victors” is usually said in the context of war and global power dynamics, I can’t help but relate it to the current political atmosphere of the United States. Ever since President Trump’s win in the presidential election, there are many warnings and signs of him dismantling prior efforts that were made for equality being reversed despite how it seemed undeniably a concrete part of America.

  1. Hi Yumi,
The title of your blog caught my attention. And I love how your blog goes on to address current events that are going on in the world right now. My first Precis was based around the mass deportations Trump was planning to execute just within the Bay Area, so some of the reasons that you listed about the changes in education looked really familiar! Trump’s actions hold so much weight in all of our lives, especially those of immigrant students who are trying to work toward a better and brighter future in hopes of supporting their parents! I like how your title contrasts with the point you're making and I totally agree, Trump winning the election will definitely be the citizen’s loss.

  2. Hello Yumi, Thank you for writing about such an important topic; In Germany, hitler vanquished democracy in 57 days. It has taken a similar amount of time for the US to lose its spot as the top democratic nation in the world. Many of my right leaning friends don’t believe anything bad will happen, yet they are blind to the damage that has already been done. Recently, the military purged the Navajo Code talkers from the DOD(Department of Defense) website citing DEI. They are ethnically cleansing the history of America, removing whoever is not white from the mantle of American importance, they are slowly targeting one group at a time and eventually they will come for everyone. Most fascist attempts are stopped by the students of America, it is your duty to do what you think is right for the country, or be remembered as the people who did nothing and let him create the dark historic timeline.
