Sara - Week 15 - Small Words, Big Memories

Have you ever had something that is a saying or a joke that few people know about, but when you finally get a chance to use it, it causes you to immediately laugh or chuckle out loud? Those are inside jokes—a secret language shared with good friends or close family members. Inside jokes not only make a conversation such an awesome one; they cause memories to linger and create a connection in a special way.
Inside jokes typically result from a funny moment, a dumb moment, or even a dumb misunderstanding. Maybe it was something crazy someone had said or something bizarre that just occurred and your crew of you all had chuckled at. Those moments get shifted to such unique quotes or lines which become close only with your crew after some time. Whenever one of those quotations comes up again, it feels like hitting the "pause" button that takes you back to that happy place. Everyone automatically remembers the context to it and feels that way again.
The beauty of these jokes is that they demonstrate how words aren't necessarily language — but a way to transmit feelings and recall. The words themselves become teeny-tokens of love and affection, capturing passing moments in the dull world. Even if you mayn't have spoken to a person for years, recalling an in joke can whisk you back immediately to those good old times, reminding you of what it was that kept you together.
In a way, inside jokes turn ordinary words into magic. They create special words that only you and people closest to you know, with laughter, belief in each other, and history together. That is the reason these small bits of expressions and jokes are so much richer than bare words — they are memories of the moments and the people that cannot be replaced in life.
So the next time you find yourself laughing along at an inside joke, take a moment to remember that you are holding on to a secret language made up of memory. It's a beautiful illustration of how language unites us in ways greater than meaning — it unites us with laughter and love.

I genuinely thought my performance was awkward and that my memory lapses were too obvious. But my tablemates and friends quickly reassured me that I did well, which I was grateful for, but didn’t truly believe. I think it’s because I don’t notice how I deliver my speeches. When I’m presenting, I switch into a different mindset where I cut out filler words, enunciate things for emphasis, and use hand gestures. It happens near automatically now through a phenomenon called implicit memory ---a type of long-term memory that causes us to unconsciously recall behavior or skills, typically through repeating these habits in the past. 2025- Abdul Muhaimin-Week 16

  This year might have been the most memorable bout of time in my recent history; even after excluding the mind bending outwardly world events, this year was still filled with the highest highs and lowest lows of my life. This blog seems like a farewell letter, partly because this is, after the end of this year I am leaving American High to join Ohlone Connections . It seems strange how I will not be seeing the wonderful friends I made during APeng, and largely in American High. So as we close this year I ask you to think about some of the memorable parts of this year, some lenses tell a more interesting tale.
